I suck. I deleted all of the content of this blog years ago in a fit of rage without making sure it wouldn't offend the people who took the time to contribute their writing. I am thinking of restarting it and if anyone would like to come back, let me know. :)

Edit: Used the Wayback Machine to find some of the old content and re-posted. I'm so sorry guys. I can't believe I removed it all in the first place.

Management VS Product Makers

About a month ago, our General Manager of Campus Food Service told us that we needed to cut payroll expenses to make up for the loss of business. This loss of business is usual for full food service locations during this time of the year. Usually, most restaurants have plans made ahead of time to take effect during the loss of business. These plans usually include a preset budget. Our location is different. We don't need no stinking plan. We can play it by ear. We can make small changes here and there to alleviate any occurrence that impedes our business model.

 That's the impression I had of what our management thought of the impending crisis. Sure enough, when the time came, management literally came swooping through the door trying to desperately cut corners. One interesting tactic they used was to cut all the morning baristas. So who was going to serve the customers? Why who else? The back of the house staff!

 While we serve customers, we can't make items to sell later customers. When we don't have product, our managers wonder why nothing is made. Apparently, they think that the morning doesn't do enough business because when they arrive at ten a.m., there are just a few customers around. This is a meter for management to tell how much business the morning does. Unfortunately, they don't believe in looking at the sales track before ten a.m.

Recruitment Agency

I hate recruitment agencies. Ok, sometimes it's a good thing, they find you a good job, the company like you and you get a permanent position. Mostly, they find you a temporary job with the promise that it might become permanent. Which it doesn't. Look at it from various points of view; The company gets a worker who is undoubtedly cheaper than their common employees, even considering the sum taken by the recruitment company for their services.

They also don't have to provide any kind of bonuses or other benefits common to more permanent workers. Additionally, should company fortunes take a turn for the worse, they can be dismissed with a minimum of fuss, with a short amount of notice and very little in the way of reason. With many, a simple we don't need you any more will suffice. The recruitment company gets a fixed percentage of the workers paycheck each week. They're skimming off the top of what someone else is earning. It's like taxes, only they don't have to justify to anyone what they do with the money.

If that person gets fired, there's always more unemployed people and companies needing people in a hurry. It's not money you have to work hard for. The worker gets paid less than anyone he works with, no long term security and no benefits. The only thing he can be certain of is that he's an expendable part of the work force.

I work with some crazy-ass people.
There's the attention seeking, mood swings, crazy high pitched voices, incessant whistling, occasional groping, jealousy, obsessiveness, etc.
Somehow I deal with all this.
I get angry, but I push past it and keep working.
When the hardcore, repetitive, talentless dance music was played at such a volume that I could barely hear what I was thinking, there was no way I was going to make it to the end of the shift.
So I put Planet Rock on.
Eventually the dance music subsided.
Pink Floyd wins again.

Seriously, clean the fricking pans when you're done with them. I'm tired coming in half awake in the morning only to grab a pan that has.... what the hell is this?? Bacon grease?? Bacon grease in a pastry kitchen? WHAT THE HELL IS BACON GREASE DOING ON A PASTRY PAN? No wait... what in the world!? Why is it on 7 of my 10 sheets???

In other news, my baking experience is only about four months, give or take the couple of times I've baked at home, yet many people think I've been doing this for years. I don't get it. I under produce what the last baker did. The only thing different I do is... well... taking a phrase from Men In Black: I make this shit look good.And no, I did not use the previous baker's allergy to banana nut muffins to my advantage.

For the best part of four months my job was very repetitive. The work, combined with some of the people was slowly driving me nuts. I did what I needed to do however, and I helped get the section I was assigned to running properly.

Today I was rewarded with a bottle of wine and a letter thanking me for my hard work.

This is just bad...

Ok, so I've made a career hop in the meantime and now I'm the Customer Support Training Specialist in our office. This means... that I get to write training manuals, deal with new id... khm agents and every once in a while I get to travel a bit. Good thing is, my boss is in Luxembourg, so nice and far away from Tallinn, bad thing is, that means that I'm the last person to find out about important things. You might imagine I'm not very happy about it.

The latest "hard" case that I had was a Brazilian guy who was absolutely talented in languages. You know, he speaks 14 langauges. But give him a computer and you can't keep on wondering how this guy learned the 14 languages in the first place. Not to mention, he's shy, he doesn't understand whole English or were jsut my explanations

too advanced (dunno) and what came out after a week was that he was short-sighted. He had -4 (which is like almost blind) and I can't really imagine how he even could walk on without glasses. I mean, I have -2.75 and -3.75 and I can't walk around without glasses...

Now imagine, this person, put him first behind the ccmputer, explain what is copy-paste, if you want him to do smth, do not just tell him - grab the mouse to the right place and say "click". If you wanted him to learn something, explaining was not enough - make an exercise... which took with his short-sightedness around 2-3 hours (other ppl do it in at least half the time). Now tell me, am I here to teach Computer 1'o'1 or our companies products and systems? Well I felt depressed by the end of that week. Then luckily, when the training program was done (and he of course didn't have any questions) I could hand him over to his boss :) - you can't imagine what a relief...

But I seriously hope, I'll never get this kind of a person again... this is just too much, you've got to know the easy stuff.. at least? Too much to ask? I wonder if in the future I'll have to start teaching them, how to click the "ok" button... that would be just so lame already. I mean, that wasn't what I signed for, I think?

If you receive a phone call but are unable to answer and then decide you're going to return the call and ask who tried to get in touch with you, don't hang up while I'm DOING MY JOB by asking everyone in the office if they called for you. Geeze.
